Mood: unkown
Yesterday night i went to the cold play "viva" concert. My sister was simultaneously at the sound relief concert [watch out for that guest entry, next post].I was a little skeptical about coldplay's upcoming performance since they had played another concert just hours prior(Sound relief). These fears were not allayed by the warm up acts Dekota Ride and Mercury Rev. Both acts had a similar vibe to Cold play but to a less hooky mainstream extent. I unfortunately found myself unable to connect to Dekota Ride. They had very few words for the audience...both in their songs and otherwise.Considering i was restless, it was even more difficult to connect to the music or the musicians. Out of boredom, we had the Mexican wave going through the stadium including the mosh at least 6 times. As the night wore on the audience grew weary and disrespectful, boo-ing the act and cheering when they left. I just hope they assumed it was for the quality of their performance because that was uncalled for.
Mercury Rev, previously unknown to me, took a little getting used to. I wasn't able to clearly hear and understand any of the lyrics which started to irritate me once my concert partner in crime, seph, had pointed it out. He connects to music on a lyrical level so it frustrated him to no end.I liked the last 3 songs but most of my efforts were wasted straining to understand it. Once again the lead singer failed to engage me with banter and i started drifting off to the sound of the pretty melodies. Good for setting a certain ambiance, but i was at a concert not a dinner!Would probably listen to their music on CD, just because i think the higher sound quality would actually allow me to enjoy myself better.
Coldplay, thanks to Chris Martin, did not suffer the same fate. He engaged with the audience and his fellow musicians, making jokes, skipping like a child and correcting mistakes he made as he went. The latter was quite endearing.Speaking of Chris Martin, he can play the guitar, flash a genuine smile, be humble enough to thank his audience for taking time out of their Saturday to attend the concert and play the piano wonderfully. Either i have gained a greater understanding of Gweneth Paltrow or of the skill of his PR people. It was nice to see that the other talent sharing the stage weren't overshadowed by a charismatic front man either. The new songs were played as well as their previous hits such as yellow. Yellow balloons filled with streamers fell form the ceiling and as people bounced them onto the stage anyone manning a guitar on stage attempted to pop them resulting in an explosion of yellow streamers.
We had odd surprises to compensate for the fact that we weren't able to be at sound relief, such as the appearance of shane warne playing 2 maracas that were glued together to simulate skill, as well as sing along to bee gees, beachboys and John farnham songs. The night was an over all success, which even seph who doesn't particularly love Coldplay had to admit.
I am definitely a bigger fan having attended the concert, not just of coldplay, but of Chris Martin...even if he did name his child apple
